Sound Underground is a compact trio with an expansive imagination. Their inquisitive approach is guided by words of wisdom from jazz legend Wayne Shorter: "You've got to go down in the basement and visit every note.” Composed of saxophonist David Leon, trumpeter Alec Aldred and guitarist Jonah Udall, the collective steers through inventive textures far beyond the limits of its unconventional chamber instrumentation.
The trio’s music emanates the warmth of its members’ close friendships. They hail from far-flung corners of the United States - Udall is from Berkeley, California, Aldred from Waukesha, Wisconsin, and Leon from Miami, Florida - and formed in 2013 while living together in Miami, building the close personal bonds that ground their strong musical connection.
Intimate and conversational, their music explores the lengths of acoustic jazz, and beyond. The trio draws on a broad array of influences including Americana, Bulgarian folklore, and the music of luminaries such as Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Giuffre, Joni Mitchell and Jim Hall to distill a deeply personal voice. The result is a sincere and striking reflection of who they are, that doesn’t hide the subtleties or imperfections. At once serious and whimsical, their music tells stories from the soul.
Sound Underground released its self-titled debut in 2014 with a tour of Eastern Europe, performing at major international jazz festivals in Bulgaria and Serbia. They have been on the rise ever since, touring across the U.S. as well as returning to the continent. Their sophomore effort Quiet Spaces will be released this September.
A native of Berkeley, California, Jonah Udall is an eclectic bandleader, composer and guitarist, often found collaborating with songwriters, arranging for large ensembles, or exploring Balkan folk music in addition to his jazz work. His journey through music, which began with Stevie Wonder, has brought him broad influences, from Jim Hall to Joni Mitchell.
Originally from Waukesha, WI, Alec Aldred is a trumpet & flugelhorn player who recently placed second in The National Trumpet Competition 2015. His musical influences include trumpet greats Clifford Brown, Freddie Hubbard, and Tom Harrell among others. In addition to his musical endeavors, Alec performs and competes with dance teams in tap, jazz, and hip hop styles.
David Leon is a Cuban-American saxophonist, woodwinds player, and composer living in Miami, FL. He leads multiple ensembles including his trio “#bicmnrosfulmfrenh”, which was recognized in Downbeat Magazine’s Student Music Awards in 2015. Furthermore, his work as a composer has been recognized by Downbeat Magazine, the ASCAP Foundation, and the National YoungArts Foundation. He continually seeks new sounds to inform his music and is currently exploring Bulgarian folk music, microtonality, and free improvisation.
