Another review! This time from Gapplegate Music!
"If you have a similar background to me, the first thing that hits you in listening to the trio Sound Underground and their album Quiet Spaces is their apparent rootedness in the classic later-'50s Jimmy Giuffre with Jim Hall and Bob Brookmeyer. There is a chamber jazz approach in common. The instrumentation of Jonah Udall on electric guitar, David Leon on alto sax, and Alec Aldred on trumpet involves a similar openness of execution, with Jonah pivoting between chordal work and a third voice. The compositions (by all three trio members) have a kind of genetic relation to the Giuffre classical-folk-jazz nexus. They are notable for their structural bent and memorability. And the improvising schemas are well thought out like the Giuffre three-some's were. But foremost in this is despite the genetic relationship the music does not really sound at all like Giuffre's did in those days. That's because it is so many years later and also because all three follow their own muses. Put all that together and you have something very nice indeed. Check this out!"

Another review in from Jeff Becker, Jazz Sensibilites!
"Quiet Spaces its magical essence and musical pictures. Indeed, the album is a strongly programmatic concept, the listener is taken on a journey through a conversation between three friends. As we witness the progression of the conversation with sounds vividly portraying myriad shifts in the balance of topics, leading us through different moods, and even making us feel the ever-changing patterns of an imaginative story." Jeff Becker, Jazz Sensibilites
We have had a fantastic summer playing shows in Wisconsin in May and completing an amazing West Coast tour in late June – mid July.We traveled 4000 miles from LA to Seattle playing in 14 cities and 4 states promoting the release of Quiet Spaces and were able to bring our music to many new venues and audiences. 'Till next time!
Advance praise for Quiet Spaces from Jazz Times
"An inimitable and profoundly special group sound… encapsulated by a venture-seeking aura… the music flows organically and has a natural breath about it. Indeed, a top-shelf product that beckons repeated listens." - Jazz Times
We are very excited to annouce the release of our next record! Quiet Spaces will arrive to online distributors on September 15th. Pre-order will be available soon! The Timucua White House in Orlando is legendary, mostly for it’s eclectic programming that brings a broad swath of international luminaries across genres, and even mediums, to central Florida. We found out at our set last weekend that the venue itself, and the superhuman visionary behind it, are just as worthy of its fame. Benoit Glazer has built one of the most stunning acoustic performance spaces we’ve ever heard – in his house. And not to speak of the community that he’s built around it, truly a unique experience. He shot an HD DVD of the set you can get a sample of below. Stay tuned for how to see the whole thing!
We are thrilled to announce that we'll be heading back to Bulgaria in just three weeks for the Haskovo Jazz Fest! In addition we'll be touring across the country visiting many of the beautiful places we saw last year. We hope to see some friends!
We are excited to have just returned from a very successful tour of northern California. In only 12 days, we played 12 shows, presented 2 clinics at local schools, and drove over 1000 miles in between. We played gigs all over the San Francisco Bay Area as well as in Sacramento, Mokelumne Hill, Santa Rosa, and Reno. Along the way, we were fortunate enough to see and play with some old friends and make many new ones. We had a great time on tour and are looking forward to returning soon!
We are honored to have been awarded Best Small Jazz Ensemble in the 2015 Downbeat Student Music Awards! Check out this month’s issue of the magazine for the full award listings. We’re very excited to be recognized alongside many talented friends.
